Saturday 19 May – AC DISPATCH: South Summit
Good morning at 7am from Everest Base Camp where I have just
heard that Mike and the AC team are now on the South Summit! Dean and
Iza are about half an hour behind, crossing the rock band just below the
South Summit. Everyone is doing well.
Since leaving The Balcony the team will have made their way onto the South-East ridge, travelling along moderate, undulating terrain to a rock buttress known as the South Summit Rocks. Unlike the Yellow Band, Geneva Spur or Hillary Step, the South Summit Rocks tend to be something of a surprise to most climbers as they do not feature in most of the Everest climbing literature. The South Summit Rocks are made up of a series of rock ledges and they are climbed on the Kanchung Face side of the ridge. Having negotiated this often tricky section the route then leads onto open snow slopes and the crest of the SE ridge and, after about 100m, the South Summit proper is reached.
It is a beautiful morning here in Base Camp and I am sure that the team will be enjoying fanstatic views over Kanchenjunga, Lhotse & Makalu. The South Summit offers the team a good opportunity to rest, eat, drink and change oxygen bottles before the final part of the climb to the summit of Everest.
Thanks for following tonight’s summit bid and I look forward to updating you again soon as the AC team take their final steps to the summit of Mount Everest!

Saturday 19 May – AC DISPATCH: First Summits for AC!
3.20am Nepal Time
A huge congratulations to Joan Clofent and Ang Dorjee Sherpa who have just topped out on the summit of Mount Everest with Nawang Sherpa and Kami Rita Sherpa!
This also sees Joan complete his Seven Summits so double congratulations to him! Joan also sends his love to his family from the top of the world.
Joan is also in good company with Ang Dorjee clocking up his sixteenth summit and Kami Rita his twelfth. This is Nawang’s first Everest summit and we extend a huge congratulations to him from the whole AC family.
This first summit team made great time ahead of the crowds, with only three other climbers ahead of them! It is still dark out there but we should see the first glimmer of daylight soon. The wind has begun to pick up and Joan, Ang Dorjee, Kami and Nawang have already begun their descent.
I look forward to bringing you news from the rest of the team as soon as I receive it.
Congratulations once again to our first summiteers for the 2012 season!

Saturday 19 May – AC DISPATCH: Balcony and beyond
It’s 1am here in Nepal and news just in is that Mike, Peter,
Wilfred and Neil are nearing the Balcony, with Dean and Iza just behind.
Ang Dorjee and Joan are storming ahead and are below the South Summit.
The Balcony is traditionally known as the ‘halfway point’ en route to the summit of Mt Everest. Having begun the climb by traversing the Blue Ice Bulge, the team will have then started their way up the Triangular Face. The route used today is well left of the original route taken by Tenzing & Hillary and makes its way up moderate angled snow slopes to a large rock, which is the site of an old camp, and than onto The Balcony itself. Many feel that this section of the climb is the ‘psychological crux’ of summit day; one is climbing in the dark and during the coldest part of the night. As it is can be difficult to get a sense of how much progress you are making it is easy to get disheartened so well done to the whole team for making it this far in good style!
At The Balcony the team will take their first ‘pack off’rest break. They will change their oxygen bottle here, and also cached one bottle for the descent. A quick snack and a drink and they will be off again!
The weather is still and clear and although the mountain is crowded tonight no problems have been reported.
Thanks for supporting tonight’s summit team and the next update will follow shortly.
